Mark Twain commented, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”
Have you ever wanted to achieve something or perhaps a list of things? Something you wanted to achieve a long time ago but life kept getting in the way, your responsibilities, your job, your relationships little things that made you put your dreams on hold.
You keep telling yourself, one day you will get everything that you’ve ever wanted. You will get to travel the world, write a book, visit France, buy a beach house, get married, meditate, and write a book. You’ll be that person who has hobbies and interests.
One day, one day, one day. Well — the truth of the matter is, that proverbial “one day” never comes, does it? Ever. The truth is in life there is never a perfect time to do something. You have to make a decision and work with what you have.
How exactly do I get ahead in life?
1. Always Make More than You Spend
The first rule for exiting the rat race is to make more money than you spend. Your income should always be more than your expenses. Sounds pretty simple right? Well, you would be surprised at just how many people break this rule on a monthly and yearly basis. For the most part, people end up falling further behind with each passing month than getting ahead in life.
According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Household Debt and Credit report from the second quarter of 2020, the average US household has $35,660 in mortgage debt, $2,980 in credit card debt and $5,610 in student debt.
And while some debt is good to carry for you to build your credit history, the accumulation of these high-interest debts including credit card debt makes getting ahead all the more difficult.
Regardless of what your financial situation is right now, and the sacrifices you make in downgrading your house, car, or lifestyle know that it will not forever be like this. The delayed gratification that you choose right now will ensure you have an easier road ahead.
After all, you can never get ahead in life if you’re merely slaving away to pay back the debt that you’ve previously accumulated. There will always be areas you can cut back on, and cash that you can save it just depends on how determined you are to get ahead.
“It’s not the lack of resources, it’s your lack of resourcefulness that stops you”- Tony Robbins.
